Island reds, greens and blues

OUR FAMOUS POTATOES

On our little Island, we're surrounded by lush potato fields in the summer. Their tidy rows, undulating in verdant rows throughout the countryside, lend much to the surrounding beauty. But this beauty is not benign. There is much controversy over the use of pesticides and fungicides, the various chemicals used by potato farmers to keep their crops healthy and marketable.

We take an empathetic stand on these issues. Perhaps we're even sitting on the proverbial fence. But here's the reality. The simple potato is as much a part of Island life as are red sand beaches, lobsters, and world famous oysters and mussels.

Many Islanders make their living farming potatoes; many visitors to the Island take home bags of spuds to enjoy back home. And Island farmers are working hard to change their farming methods. Some even grow organic potatoes which you can find at local farmers' markets.
