A Bird With A Funny Little Call Piping plovers or Charadrius melodus, with their plaintive bell-like whistles, are small sand-coloured birds about the size of a sparrow. They nest and feed along coastal sand and gravel beaches. On Prince Edward Island, we don't have gravel beaches but we do have miles and miles of sandy beaches and these areas are the preferred habitats of Piping Plovers.
